Assisting Families Living in Fear

Many families in our area continue to live in fear due to confusion around current immigration policies and enforcement. This fear, along with disruption in government food assistance, is creating additional food insecurity. Triangle Mutual Aid is working with other local agencies to help families who have been impacted by ICE/Customs and Border Patrol activities. St. Paul’s is hosting a Solidarity Food and Supply Drive during the month of June to help restock essential food, hygiene and household items that are needed. Look for the donation box starting June 7. A list of the needed items is found here.

If you are interested in being a back-up for delivering donations from St. Paul’s to the central donation spot in Raleigh (at Raleigh Brewing Company), please let Vivian Lembo (vincarolina@pm.me) know. If you are interested in helping pack the boxes that go to the families, please contact Maria Castro (lanena3018@gmail.com) for more details.

Looking for other ways you can help?

1. Check out the newly formed Wake Interfaith Immigration Network for events and learning opportunities. Join the first public event, Interfaith United For Immigrants, on Sunday, June 7 from 3-5 p.m. at Edenton St. United Methodist Church. This event is free and open to all, and will be a gathering with music, prayer, and stories, held in solidarity with our immigrant neighbors.  No registration is required, and parking at the church (in downtown Raleigh) is plentiful.

2. Attend the Know Your Rights Workshop on Thursday, June 11 at 7:00 pm hosted by Good Shepherd UCC in Cary:
Good Shepherd UCC, 1050 NW Maynard Rd. in Cary, is hosting a “Know Your Rights” workshop on Thursday, June 11 at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. It will be led by a representative of the advocacy group North Carolina Asian Americans Together and will present information about immigration enforcement and dealing with ICE and Border Patrol agents, both for people in targeted populations and for allies who wish to provide support. The workshop will be useful for anyone– US-born residents, immigrants, citizens and non-citizens alike. Anyone is welcome to attend!
